Technology

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is an emerging medical imaging technology that is nonintrusive, portable, and radiation-free. In human thorax imaging, a number of electrodes are attached around the human thorax. The electrodes are excited by current patterns, and the resulting voltages on the electrodes are measured. The measured data contain information about tissue conductivity in the thorax, which can be reconstructed through linear and nonlinear inversion algorithms. EIT is sensitive to the air or liquid changes, which is a promising tool for bedside monitoring of lung function.

Applications

Monitoring of Lung Function
Individualized PEEP Titration
Quantification of Alveolar Expansion/ Collapse
Lung Ventilation Monitoring
Assessment of Ventilation Treatment
Monitoring of Untoward Reaction in Mechanical Ventilation
Monitoring of Lung Blood Flow
Surveillance and Management of Thoracic Diseases

EIT enables clinicians to concisely and quickly identify regional ventilation status and/or regional blood flow status of the lungs at the bedside. Moreover, EIT can calculate lung compliance through the measurement of lung ventilation status, calculate the alveolar ventilation blood flow ratio through the detection of regional ventilation and blood flow status, so as to realize real-time individualized monitoring and management of ventilation process and real-time assessment of lung perfusion status.
